Poster for Stretta: ‘Fall in love with a local’

The outer world is what we wake up to every morning of our lives, the place where we must try to make our living. In the inner world there is neither work nor monotony. We visit it only in dreams and musings, and it’s strangeness is such that we never find the same world on two successive occasions. What wonder, then, if human beings in their search for the divine have generally preferred to look within.

There are 600 varieties of fig, each with its own flower inside the fruiting body (the fig) and each of which has a specific fig wasp partner, co-evolved to pollinate it.

The female wasp must enter the flower through a tiny tunnel, losing her wings in the process and therefore dooming herself inside the fig. She lays eggs inside the fruit and the resulting male wasps emerge first, mating with the unborn females. They then drill holes through the fruit to enable the new born females to escape and begin the whole pollination process all over again.

Where the Atlantic waves
Roll to an end
And crawl up to weathered rocks
Like children returning to parents.
Feeling the wind blowing on my face
And wondering if this same breeze
Also brushed the cheeks of loved ones afar.
Hoping that it gave them the same embrace
That I am receiving now.
